Hello, I hope I'm not crossing any boundaries or breaking any rules here if so I apologize. Here's my question if its allowed to be posted, I'll try and make it brief.
So about 4 years ago my mom developed dementia at the time I was renting an apartment in a different city driving boats in the port of LA and she was living alone about an 1h20mins from me and close to 3hrs in traffic. At first I tried to juggle between my job And taking care of her which ultimately led me to walk away from my job and doing what i loved plus any social life i once had and i moved in with her and became her caretaker. FFWD
So I started working on her house To keep myself busy , ran up a credit card bill with a high interest rate that I'm still paying on that doesn't seem to be getting lower. Then at some point the question came up if something happens to her what's going to happen to the house? Come to find out she owed a lot of money on it from a reverse mortgage interest free to the tune of 268k. So I applied for a 1st time VA loan paid off her dept but now i gained a mortgage and barley squeaking by. The House needed a lot of work one of the big things was the roof, Due to that I was in threat of losing homeowners insurance. Then a friend told me about solar panels, How they replaced his roof for free cuz they wont Install solar panels on a bad roof.
So after posting an inquiry on Facebook in the community group that I was in for My neighborhood I got in touch with a guy who worked for a company who then sent a sales guy over to my place to do an assessment. These guys are always fast talkers they talk so damn fast And then they disappear as soon as you sign the contract. FFWD
Here's the bottom line: I heard the sales guy say I wouldn't be paying the power company anymore but I would be paying Sunrun instead a 100 bucks a month or something but any over usage id have to pay the power company the difference. The power bill was in my moms name and was set up for automatic pay or reoccurring pay. And because I was generating electricity Now and with the impression the sales guy left me that if I generated more than I used the power company would be paying me or my mom should I say. So I didn't monitor the bill. I just figured if something went wrong and they shut off the power then I deal with it then and this went on for two years not a peep from the power company.. so I just figured everything was O K.
Problem : Well a few months ago my mom finally passed away and if that wasn't hard enough at the same time One day my power goes off without any warning. So I called the power company and they tell me that there's an outstanding payment in the amount of $8000 fricken dollars!!!!!!!! and some change...WHAT????? I said how did it get so high??? More importantly why wasn't our power shut off at even two hundred dollars past due??? Why'd you allow it to get to 8 fricken K?? They said because I guess apparently at that time that I got solar panels they switched my mom's account from a monthly billing cycle to an annual billing cycle?? So then I asked why didn't they shut it off after the first year that it was past due??? And more importantly why would they even switch her to an annual billing cycle in the first place???? After getting no answer for that I tell them well my mom is no longer living and i need the power back on. So the only thing I could do would start a new account in my name. And so that's what happened. That was all just a few months ago , And for the last two months I was paying my bill on time so fast forward to The present I get a letter from the power company with a past due balance of guess what?? 8K past due!!!! They tacked her bill onto my bill, And I had five days to pay it or they're going to shut it off. They never once mentioned to me that they needed a death certificate so that was the first thing. So I sent them a death certificate And then they said well as long as I can provide proof that I wasn't living there the whole time then her debt will be forgiven. So in desperation this is the reason why I came to this particular community Assuming this would be the best place to look.
So my question is, And hopefully it's not out of line, But due to the circumstances I need to figure out how I can provide proof that I was still living at my last address longer then i actually did ? I'm pretty sure I threw all my old utility bills away in the trash but even if I had one could I use white out or something? to change the due date or maybe download a blank rental agreement or something and go that route? or is there a much simpler solution that will get out of this mess that will satisfy the Power company and get them off my back??? Cuz To be honest What I'm requesting for help with kind of feels like a little white lie , And even though I find fault in myself and blame myself for not paying more attention to my moms account what this power company did is way over the top And in a way I feel like they're being dishonest with me, I mean who's ever heard of being put on an annual billing cycle? And if that Is what they do when you go solar then when I started my account why didn't they put me on an annual billing cycle?? Why was I paid my bill monthly?? The whole thing stinks to high heaven and it seems like the easiest route is to come up with proof that I Wasn't living here the whole time Which is what they're requesting.
Anyway if this post made it through I appreciate any feedback you may have.
